Annie Leibovitz has managed to capture beautiful, honest, and provocative moments through photography. There's more to her prolific portfolio than profiling famous subjects. Leibovitz takes over and modernizes the Pirelli calendarin Londonfor 2016 focusing on distinguished women of all ages.
Leibovitz shot classic black and white portraits of 13 women from various industries who were chosen for the calendar. Natalia Vodianova, Serena Williams, Fran Lebowitz, Yoko Ono, Patti Smith and Amy Schumer are among the thirteen.
“I think that Pirelli has been wanting to do this for a few years, to shift,” she said, adding, “I love to take something that you wouldn’t expect and make something out of it. I’m not afraid of that.”
“When Pirelli first came to me and said they wanted to shift this year to something different, I said that after all these years of the Pirelli calendar, and what it has been, I don’t think you can shift it that fast. I don’t think you can suddenly do something else,” said Liebovitz.
“I’m very very proud of it, and I’m proud of Pirelli for taking that step, too — it’s such a big step,” Leibovitz said. “It shouldn’t be — but it is.
The 43rd calendar was launched at a news conference in London’s Mayfair.
